LANSING, Mich. — Ele’s Place Capital Region, a healing center for grieving children and teens, and Derek Melot are excited to announce the inaugural recipients of the Jesse Melot Memorial Scholarship award. This scholarship, named in memory of longtime Ele’s Place volunteer Jesse Melot, supports the educational opportunities of other Ele’s Place volunteers or participants in the Mid-Michigan region.
Jesse Goulding, past Ele’s Place participant and current volunteer, will utilize the dollars to continue his education at the University of Michigan. Telicia Patrick, who has served Ele’s Place Capital Region as both a volunteer facilitator and Social Work Masters intern, will be able to finish her degree in Social Work in order to support mental health in our community.
“Our first two recipients could not be better examples of the commitment to service and community that marked my husband Jesse.” said Derek Melot, “I know Telicia Patrick and Jesse Goulding will do wonderful things in the years to come. I’m just pleased that the fund is able to help them pursue their dreams.”
The fund was started in early 2019, following Jesse’s death at the age of 37. He had served Ele’s Place as an intern, and then decided to become a volunteer facilitator, in order to support grieving children directly.
“Jesse exemplified the type of volunteer who makes Ele’s Place such a special opportunity for grieving children, teens and their families. Our strong volunteer base allows us to provide our programs to families free of charge,” said Kristine Kuhnert, Director of the Capital Region branch, “We are so grateful that Jesse’s legacy lives on amongst our volunteers, and especially through this scholarship.”
