Most hunters with licenses in Michigan have taken safety courses, and officers from the Department of Natural Resources want those hunters to remember what they learned as they head out into the woods.
Experts recommend checking bows for any frays or cracks and making sure your tree stand is in good shape.
Sergeant Steve Orange from the Michigan DNR told FOX 47 that the biggest problem conservation officers see during bow season is hunters falling out of their tree stands.
Sergeant Steve Orange, Michigan DNR said, "We want them to use a 100% fall restraint system, so not just when you're up in the tree stand, but when you're going up or down. You want to make sure that you have that protection."
Having a cell phone on hand, and a way to charge it could also save your life.
"You want to make sure that that's accessible. If you were to fall or something, you need to be able to grab it, you need to be able to call 911 and you need to be able to call for assistance," said Orange.
Another good safety tip is to share your plans before you head out. That includes times and places of where you should be.
Bow-hunting season runs now through November 14, and then starts back up December 1 to January 1.
