The 4-year-old victim of a hit and run in Jackson County remains in serious condition Tuesday.
The incident happened around 4 p.m. on Devereaux Road in Parma Township. Police say the boy was crossing the road to get the mail at the time of the incident.
Family identifies the hit and run victim as 4-year-old Mason Humphrey.
"I'd never dream he'd gone out in the road and get hit by a car," said Marianne Humphrey's, Mason's Great Grandmother.
Mason was first transferred to the Henry Ford Allegiance Hospital but has since been transferred to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He's undergone surgery to repair a skull fracture.
"I hollered to him, I thought he had fallen in the road," said Marianne. "I said 'what are you doing? Get out of the road!' He tried to get up and he couldn't. He just feel right back down."
Police don't have an exact description of the vehicle, other than it was a white car. Family says it may have had blue stripes on the side.
"I'm confident the driver knows he struck a child," said Jackson County Undersheriff Christopher Kuhl. "Whether there is any actual eyewitnesses to the account who actually saw the child being struck. We're still evaluating what statements we have."
The Jackson County Sheriff's Department spent part of the afternoon in the neighborhood interviewing neighbors and searching for any clues.
While police investigate, family says insurance coverage may be the next problem for the family.
"They said they don't cover car accidents but he wasn't in a car accident," said Jodi Carrier, Mason's cousin. "Mom is already going through issues with how they're going to pay."
Family hopes whoever committed this crime comes forward.
"We would of understood if it was an accident but when you leave, that makes you a terrible person in my book," said Marianne.
