LANSING, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Transportation plans on re-opening all of the eastbound lanes of I-496 next week. If weather cooperates, workers say that the section could be ready on Friday, July 24th.
As a major reconstruction project that has cost upwards to $6 million dollars, construction workers have been working hard on this project for the last six months.
“The pavement itself was about 50 years old. It exceeded its design life, service life and it functioned well, but it was time to replace,” said one employee.
Not only are they re-paving the pavement using some of the remaining concrete mix, they have added safety upgrades such as ramps and bridges along the stretch. In doing this, the department can save money as well as be environment-friendly.
However, the last part of the construction project will be a little delayed. This is due in part to having to bypass a stream in order to install a brand new one.
After finishing the eastbound section, they will close down the westbound section and make upgrades.
The westbound section is expected to be finished in November.
