LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) - Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit that serves America's military families.
Their local team gathered Friday at the Michigan National Guard Joint Forces Headquarters Family Assistance Center in Lansing in honor of
" Hug a G.I." Day .
Tanya Graham, local Operations Homefront program coordinator says, "Hug a GI Day" is a holiday that commemorates U.S service members.
"It's an opportunity to give away hugs to military personnel and distribute gifts as a token of appreciation for their service to our nation," Graham said.
CMSgt. Keith Bigelow, of the U.S. Air Force, says it is important because they are in a season where many soldiers are being deployed.
" It reminds us that our job is appreciated, and we matter." he said.
The official holiday for "Hug a G.I." day is March 4 of each year.
