As we brace for our first major winter storm, it doesn't hurt to have a refresher course for driving in the snow. FOX 47's Marcus Dash spoke with a Michigan State Police Officer about how to safely drive in the snow.

Lieutenant Joseph Thomas says people need to take their time and prepare before hitting the roads,
He says, you need to make sure your tires are in good shape, make sure you have you windshield wiper fluid, and be sure to check your brakes.

Once you are set to go on the road, be prepared to slow down, and expect longer commutes, as everyone should be driving well below the speed limits.

He also says to watch out for black ice, always assume the road you are traveling on is covered in black ice, and slow down.

Thomas also says when you shovel, make sure you do not shovel the snow back into the street, that will only make the roads more dangerous.
