How to celebrate Veterans Day in Mid-Michigan

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday, observed annually on Nov. 11. It honors military veterans - that is, people who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Many communities are hosting events to commemorate the day. Here's a list we've compiled.

Veterans Day events: 

-- Bob Evans is offering veterans and active duty military personnel the choice of one of six free meals on November 11 at all Bob Evans restaurants. The choice of select breakfast (available all day), lunch, and dinner menu items are:

• Stack of Hotcakes (Buttermilk or Multigrain) 
• Fresh Baked Brioche French Toast 
• Country Biscuit Breakfast 
• Mini Sampler Breakfast 
• Farm Boy Sandwich 
• Country Fried Steak Dinner

-- CATA will offer system-wide free rides to all military veterans on Saturday. To qualify for a free trip, veterans must present valid military ID upon boarding. Free rides will be extended to eligible riders throughout the service day.

-- The Charlotte High School Concert and Symphony Bands will present their annual Veterans Day Concert on November 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Charlotte Performing Arts Center. The featured soloist for this year’s concert is accomplished Celtic music artist Patrick DeWitt. A longtime resident of Charlotte, Dewitt is a classically-trained clarinetist who has performed on bagpipes and pennywhistle for 25 years. The concert will feature a great marches, patriotic selections, and the traditional playing of the service songs from each of the five branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

-- The City of Lansing, together with the Metro Lansing Veterans Commission, will sponsor their annual Veterans Day observance on Saturday, November 11th at Lansing Catholic High School, located at 501 Marshall Street in Lansing. The event is free and open to the public.

The event begins with a complimentary breakfast from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. in the school’s café area. Exhibit tables will be on site, with participation from service dog trainees, Blue Star Families and veterans service organizations. The Veterans Day Ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m. in the auditorium. The keynote speaker is Douglas Szczepanski, Jr., an Iraq War Purple Heart Recipient, Inspirational Speaker and Minister with the non-profit organization, Miracle Soldier Inc. The ceremony will also feature Color Guard, musical performances by the Lansing Catholic Choir, Lansing Eastern High School Band, Glen Erin Pipe Band and vocalist Mary Black Junttonen.

-- The students and staff of DeWitt Public Schools will recognize and honor the sacrifices veterans have committed in securing America's freedom by paying tribute during its 12th annual Veterans Day Tribute on Friday, November 10. Veterans and community members are invited to attend this hour-long ceremony.

It will be held in the High School Gymnasium beginning at 9:15 a.m. and will include a keynote address, performances by the High School band and choir, as well as a performance by fifth and sixth grade students from Herbison Woods School.

Veterans wishing to participate are invited to attend a Welcome Reception in the High School Media Center from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., where refreshments will be served. Veterans will then be recognized in the DHS gymnasium, with the ceremony running from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. No RSVP is necessary.

-- Lansing Community College is holding a Veterans Memorial Induction Ceremony from noon to 12:30 p.m. at the Health & Human Services Building, Fred Abood Rotunda on LCC's downtown campus (515 N. Washington Square). 

LCC will induct veterans into the LCC Veterans Memorial, while honoring local men and women who have served in the armed forces.
