Housing and Urban Development Secretary Dr. Ben Carson toured the revitalized Knapp Centre Apartments in Lansing Thursday with Congressman Mike Bishop.
The Eyde Company used a HUD loan and tax credits to renovate the 80 year-old building. Carson says that's why he came to Lansing.
Bishop is in a tough race with Democrat Elissa Slotkin a month out from the election. But both men insisted that has nothing to with why they invited the media to the event.
Carson said, "It's not a Democrat or Republican thing. This is America that we're trying to fix." Bishop added, "It has nothing to do with the re-election, this is all about Lansing and seeing a plan come to fruition here."
Carson has been touring what HUD calls "economic opportunity zones" created by last years tax cut bill.
