House committee to hear testimony on smart meter fees

LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) A Michigan House Committee will hear testimony Tuesday on a bill banning opt-out fees for utility customers.

Right now, Consumers Energy and DTE charge a one-time fee of around $70 and then a $10 monthly fee for opting out of a smart meter.

The Michigan Public Service Commission rejected Consumers Energy's request to raise the fee earlier this week.

Utilities say the money covers the cost of having employees check the older meters.

We'll let you know if the committee votes on the bill.
