One of Mid-Michigan's largest homeless shelters has a new name.

What used to be the Volunteers of America shelter on Larch Street in Lansing is now Holy Cross Services - New Hope Community Center. A new sign was unveiled Wednesday.

The VOA transferred operations to Holy Cross last month, for financial reasons. Holy Cross says the shelter was very close to shutting down, which would have been devastating for the community.

Kevin McGraw, Holy Cross Services, said, "Last year we served over 7200 different, unique homeless people. We fed them, we clothed them, we sheltered them, we helped them find jobs, we treated them medically, dentally, we helped with legal issues, we helped with all of their regular issues, we tried to provide dignity to get them back on their feet. And that almost all went away."

The shelter offers 12 different programs for homeless and less fortunate people.

Holy Cross plans on adding more services next spring.
