Higher education budget concerns

The Michigan Association of State Universities said with the legislative budget coming up, public universities could be in trouble.

There is discussion going on about another cut in state support for public universities in Michigan.

"That will have a direct impact on college affordability going forward, and that is so remarkably important because there is a huge demand for talent in this state," Daniel Hurley said.

For public universities, it means staff cuts internally with possible tuition increases according to Bob Murphy, who is the Director of University Relations and Policy.

"We are a higher tuition costs state, and any sort of cut like that will keep pushing that up. Universities have been doing diligence on trying to maintain college affordability,"he said.

The Michigan Association of State Universities also said they do support Gov. Snyder's plan, but hope they'll keep investing in public universities to keep enrollment going.
