Parents of the young gymnasts who were molested by Larry Nassar say they are overwhelmed with guilt for failing to notice what was happening to their daughters.
For years, some parents thought they were misinterpreting the techniques of a renowned sports doctor. Others assumed their daughters were lying or mistaken. As more details emerged, the mothers and fathers had to face the awful truth.
Some of them confronted Nassar during his long sentencing hearing, questioning how they could have missed the abuse that sometimes happened when they were in the same room.
Nassar was sentenced to as much as 175 years in prison Wednesday. He admitted sexually assaulting athletes under the guise of medical treatment when he was employed by Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.
