LANSING, Mich. — A peaceful protest took place on Thursday in the form of a community picnic at Lake Lansing South.
The "Families belong together play in the park in solidarity" event was meant to bring awareness to family separation at the U.S. - Mexico border.
During the picnic, money was collected to help fund Aldea.
It is a main provider of legal representation for refugees and families who have been separated at the border.
Stephanie Nawyn, a protester addressed the crowd by saying, "Well, I can think of no better way to show our patriotism and standing up for people that are this oppressed. That is was this country historically has been about."
This protest comes as outrage is growing over the conditions in migrant detention facilities.
There is evidence of crowded conditions, along with a lack of food and necessities like water and clothing.
