A ceremonial groundbreaking is planned for the construction of five "tiny" houses in Detroit.

The event will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at Cass Community Social Services' Tiny Homes Detroit neighborhood on the city's west side.

The social service organization is building 25 tiny houses for formerly homeless people, senior citizens, college students and other low-income residents. Seven houses already have been built and are occupied.

The project includes homes with 250 to 400 square feet of space. Each home is on its own lot and most will have a front porch or rear deck to increase the living space.

Residents at first will rent homes and later may buy them.
