The Grand Rapids 4th of July Fireworks, scheduled this year for July 3, has joined dozens of other Independence Day celebrations and has been canceled.

“The event organizer and our Special Events Office have made several attempts to ‘reimagine’ how the event may take place, but do not feel there is a way to effectively maintain the annual fireworks display without creating adverse potential health impacts and/or running afoul of mass gathering restrictions implemented by state and county health authorities,” said City Manager Mark Washington in a release.

“The annual firework display will have to wait until next year,” added said Russ Hines, CEO of Riverbank Events and Media, which plans and executes the event.

The event draws thousands of people every year to Ah-Nab-Awen Park for a day and evening of events and entertainment and a large fireworks display at dusk.
