Grand Ledge student dies after incident in weight room

A student who was an incoming freshman at Grand Ledge lost consciousness and later passed away after an incident while working out in the weight room at the high school.

Grand Ledge Superintendent Dr. Brian Metcalf says Everson Guild lost consciousness in the weight room during a routine football workout. He was given CPR and first aid by coaches at the scene and first responders from Grand Ledge Emergency, Police, and Fire Departments .

He was transported to Sparrow where he was treated by a medical team but died at 9:45 a.m. on Monday.

Grand Ledge Superintendent released the following statement regarding the death.

July 24, 2017 –

“Today we lost an exceptional young man who was at the beginning of what promised to be an exciting high school career. Everson Guild who was an incoming freshman at Grand Ledge High School, lost consciousness today in the weight room during a voluntary, routine football workout. Coaches rushed to his side, giving CPR and using an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).

Grand Ledge Emergency, Police, and Fire Departments responded within minutes and he was immediately transported to Sparrow Hospital, where a medical team tried valiantly to save him.

“Words cannot begin to express our sorrow over the loss of this young man.

Our hearts go out to his family, his friends and his teammates and we will do everything within our power to ease their grief.”

Counseling is available in the media center at Grand Ledge High School from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm for all students and staff.
