LANSING, Mich. — Michigan's governor is taking a firm stance regarding her signature on a budget.
Governor Whitmer signaled she will not sign any state budget that does not include additional funding to fix the roads.
It could set up a potential government shutdown for this fall.
The state legislature is considering passing a budget first and then tackling roads later.
While speaking on a podcast with MIRS news, the governor said she would not sign any budget lawmakers present her that doesn't include any additional road funding money.
Governor Whitmer has been on a statewide tour pitching her proposal to raise the gas tax by 45 cents a gallon.
The proposal would give Michigan the highest fuel tax in the country.
The democratic governor says it's the smartest and quickest way to generate two billion dollars annually to fix the roads.
Republicans have called her plan a non-starter.
Governor Whitmer urged them to present their own road funding plan, which is expected to happen in the future.
During that podcast interview, Governor Whitmer vowed the state government will not shutdown because she says, "We're going to stay here all summer and get this done."
