DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Governor Whitmer appeared at the Delta Township Clerk’s office on Wednesday to encourage people to get out early and vote.
Governor Whitmer touched on topics like coronavirus relief, herd immunity, and voter intimidation. More than anything, Governor Whitmer expressed that she wants Michiganders to feel safe casting their ballots both in regards to the coronavirus and in regards to other citizens looking to scare others away from polling locations.
She says the best way to do this is to vote as early as possible-either by mail or at your local clerk’s office.
“Vote now! If anyone is concerned about the possibility of being around a lot of people in the middle of the pandemic, which is an important and healthy concern to have, they can avail themselves of the opportunity to vote now. Going into a clerk’s office is very easy. It is safe. Wear a mask and bring your ID, because that’s the law in Michigan. Cast your ballot now and you won’t have to worry about anything,” she said.
The governor says she is working closely with the Secretary of State’s office to make sure all safety measures are enforced at polls on Election Day and during early voting. She also reminded law enforcement officials of their oath to enforce all laws.
On Tuesday, local health authorities were issuing an emergency stay-at-home order for the campus in Ann Arbor.
This new order restricts mostly students to their homes, unless they’re getting food, doing an essential job, or going to class.
Governor Whitmer said that this order does not come as a surprise as the state is now at its peak when it comes to daily new cases. So far, the peak levels are similar to the numbers in April.
Whitmer said that she is tired of this situation, but that it is important to keep our guard up now more than ever.
“We know what it takes to be successful. We also know that we are tired of this. I am tired of it, too. I would love to do the holiday celebration with multiple generations of my family. I am not gonna do it this year because I know we have to keep our guard up and this virus is still very dangerous,” she said.
The governor is urging everyone to be safe, to wear masks, to keep social distancing, and wash hands.
