LANSING, Mich. — The new Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) celebrated Earth Day Wednesday morning.
The event hosted vendors to educate students and parents on the importance of protecting the environment and using renewable energy.
Booths were set up with activities, games, and arts and crafts for children to have a hands-on experience.
This new department is thanks to Governor Gretchen Whitmer's executive order in January that reorganized the Department of Environmental Quality.
Governor Whitmer spoke at the event about the importance of keeping Michigan clean.
She also helped award children who won the Earth Day poster contest.
There were 12 winners that received certificates out of 2,300 entries
Liesl Clark, Director of the Environment, Great Lakes and Energy said, "It Doesn't matter if you're from a city in Michigan or from the rural area in Michigan, like where I'm from. We're all connected to our Great Lakes and we're all connected to our resources, it matters to all of us.
It has been 49 years since the first Earth Day celebration.
