LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) - Governor Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would have created a "Choose Life" license plate. Money raised through the sale of the plate would have gone to the anti-abortion group Right to Life of Michigan. The Governor put out the following statement about the veto:
“The ‘Choose Life’ license plate is a political message that has the potential to bitterly divide millions of Michiganders and that, in my view, is not appropriate for a state-issued license plate.”
The state issues several specialty fundraiser plates featuring organizations like the Boy Scouts and the Red Cross as well as the state's public universities.
Right to Life of Michigan says it's disappointed by the Governor's decision, saying it hoped he would have supported "this wonderful opportunity to provide care to pregnant women in need and help suicide prevention efforts." Right to Life says there is support for a Choose Life plate and it looks forward to taking the issue up with the next Governor.
