LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer is taking some criticism for blocking the sale of a vacant State Prison in Ionia County.

Immigration Centers Of America made the deal to buy the Deerfield Correctional Center while Rick Snyder was in office.

The Governor blocked it because the company couldn't guarantee it would not be used to hold illegal immigrants separated from their children.

Republican State Representative Thomas Albert says the Governor blocked the sale to please her base.

Ionia Mayor Daniel Balice said the decision will hurt the city's economy.

A spokeswoman says the Governor doesn't think separating families reflects Michigan values.
