LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer sent a letter to the Department of Labor secretary requesting for the department to help federal workers who are working without pay during the federal government shutdown.

Whitmer asked that the department waive some unemployment insurance eligibility rules to let the State of Michigan provide unemployment pay for those working federal employees.

“These dedicated public servants need our help to ensure they can survive the shutdown without losing their homes or their ability to support themselves and their families,” said Whitmer.

The partial shutdown began on Dec. 22. Non-essential workers have been furloughed and essential workers are required to work without pay.

Whitmer has made help available already for furloughed federal employees in Michigan, according to a press release.
