Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff Monday, Oct. 16, within the state Capitol complex in honor of former state Rep. Mary Schroer, who died Tuesday, Oct. 3.
“Mary was a staple in the Ann Arbor community and will be dearly missed. I send my condolences to her family, friends and community during this time,” Snyder said.
Rep. Schroer graduated from Eastern Michigan University and served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1992-1998. She served as chair of the Washtenaw Community College Board of Trustees, as a board member of the Ann Arbor Community Center and as a board member of the Democratic Michigan Women's Campaign Fund.
A service in her honor was held on Thursday, Oct. 12 in Ann Arbor.
This flag order is in accordance with Executive Order 2013-10. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff. Flags should be returned to full staff on Tuesday, Oct. 17
When flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff or half-mast position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.
