LANSING, Mich. — As students begin rolling back onto MSU's campus for the new school year, so will e-scooters.
A ride-sharing company plans to launch 300-600 scooters between Lansing, East Lansing, and MSU.
People won't be seeing popular companies like Bird and Lime. The city of East Lansing said the companies haven't renewed their licensing agreement. Instead, we'll be seeing 'Gotcha' scooters.
Bird and Lime scooters flew into town in 2018 and since then ordinances have been passed regulating their use.
A MSU spokesperson said that their goal earlier this spring was to select one company for an exclusive deal with their campus. That company is 'Gotcha.'
There will be designated zones this year for the scooters to be dropped-off and picked up at and if they go well, then more zones may be added.
"I think Gotcha is also going to be working on encouraging that through their app so that's probably the biggest lesson learned is just trying to help people be responsible and respectful with them," said Tom Fehrenbach, Community and Economic Development Administrator for the city of East Lansing.
News 10 reached out to both Bird and Lime asking why they didn't renew their license. A representative from Lime said that they're still looking at the potential to operate in the area and will be making a determination in the future.
If you bought credit with Lime scooters in East Lansing, you can reach out to the company and it will offer credit refunds.
