DETROIT (WSYM) — General Motors issued layoff notices to workers at its Brownstown and Hamtramck plants Tuesday.

In state filings Tuesday, GM said the cuts at the Brownstown plant will affect around 50 workers while the layoffs at the two Hamtramck plants will affect nearly 700 workers.

The news follows GM's announcement in November of idling up to five plants in North America, resulting in the layoff of thousands of GM employees.

GM have labeled the plant closures and job cuts as "restructuring," saying the result will be a $6 billion cost saving by the end of 2020.

The Brownstown layoffs have not been previously disclosed. GM said during its announcement in November the Detroit-Hamtramck plant will be idled in 2019.

The filings said the Brownstown workers and Hamtramck employees will be laid off in February.
