LANSING, Mich. — Millions of young people, mostly high school students, are skipping school and work around the world to protest climate change and call for an end of the age of fossil fuels.
The Global Climate Strike is said to be one of the biggest global demonstrations in history.
The Lansing demonstration took place Friday, Sept. 20, from noon to 2 p.m.
The march was a global event linking young people together in the common goal of reversing climate change, and their fear of what global warming means for their futures.
According to the Global Climate Strike website, in over 150 countries people are supporting young climate strikers and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels.
In pictures of demonstrations you can see people crowding the street, young people lifting megaphones to the sky with expressions of righteous anger.
The protests coincide with a week of activism at the United Nations, including a Youth Climate Summit on Saturday and a U.N. Climate Action Summit on Monday.
Swedish 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg sailed to NYC on a solar powered sail boat to attend Fridays protest and the Youth Climate Summit.
The significance of protesting on Friday comes from Thunberg.
Thunberg would skip school on Fridays to stand in front of the Swedish parliament holding a sign protesting inaction on climate change.
A second strike is planned for Friday, Sept. 27.
