LANSING, Mich. — A local Girl Scout is hoping to reduce the number of mosquitos in the area, by attracting more bats.

Troop 30369 Senior Girl Scout Rachel Loren is building bat houses and putting them in Eaton Rapid's Oak Ridge Park.

The township gave her the boxes to help her with the project. It's all an effort to get the 'Gold Award,' which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Loren says the park is important to her and hopes the boxes make more people come.

"I noticed that especially in this area with the pond that there's a lot of mosquitos during certain times of the year. And so I knew that the bats, being natural predators, would help take care of that problem and make the park a little more enjoyable for visitors," Loren said.

Building bat boxes isn't the only thing Loren is doing. She has also added two small mammal homes in the parks and plans to add a geo-cache, a boardwalk, and more. She hopes her contributions will make the park more fun for visitors while teaching them too.
