LANSING, Mich. — Classes were back in session Monday for Charlotte, Grand Ledge, and Webberville.

Jackson will be back later this week and Lansing a week from Monday.

With back to school already here, getting kids back into a routine is crucial, and doctors say making changes to your routine requires some thought.

"Making changes in your routine requires a very conscious effort and realizing it's going to take a few weeks of it being kind of difficult as you're getting into these kinds of habits but being very consistent is the key to doing it," Dr. Stephanie Walsh, of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, said.

A good sleep schedule is also the key to conquering back to school.

"Regular sleep, consistent sleep is so important on multiple levels as far as just success in school but even regulating emotions along the day," Dr. Walsh said.

After a summer off, its going to be hard getting kids back on a normal routine.

According to some doctors, a great way to help with that is putting the kids to bed about 15 to 30 minutes early every night until school starts.

It can take about two weeks for a child to get into a new sleep schedule.

"So if they're going to bed at midnight and you really want them in bed at 10 you have to think about how long that's gong to take and start that process ahead of time," Dr. Walsh said.

Doctors say another great way to help your child get back into routine is eating breakfast every morning.

Eating a good breakfast each day helps children focus more in school.

Getting kids back into a sleep routine takes time so parents should be patient and consistent with this process.
