Get in line for snow tires because they are selling out quick

LANSING, Mich. — Several auto shops in mid-Michigan say they've had dozens of people requesting snow tires already this week.

Auto experts say good tires are more important than having all-wheel drive when it comes to stopping and steering in the snow.

Winter tires have deeper grooves to channel snow and keep more of the tire in contact with the road in bad weather.

They also have rubber compounds formulated to improve grip in cold conditions, where standard, all-season tires may not hold up.

New winter tires generally cost one hundred to two hundred dollars each.

For those who choose not to invest in snow tires experts say the best thing you can do is check your tire pressure.

Low tire pressure can put a strain on tires and cause a blowout.

For added weight on rear-wheel drive cars, put sand or salt in the back of the car for traction.
