JACKSON, Mich. — The city of Jackson is teaming up with Consumers Energy, local law enforcement and various community partners for an initiative aimed at building safer neighborhoods.
Volunteers will be going door-to-door in Jackson neighborhoods to hand out free lightbulbs as part of 'Light Up the City' program in Jackson.
The goal is to encourage people to make neighborhoods safer by encouraging them to turn on front porch lights in an effort to improve safety and reduce crime.
Lightbulbs will be distributed on various dates throughout the summer. Volunteers will meet on each date at 5:30 p.m. before beginning to walk the neighborhoods at 6 p.m.
The meetings will happen on the following dates and locations:
- June 20: Habitat for Humanity, 251 Prospect St.
- June 27: Salvation Army, 806 E. Pearl St.
- July 11: Habitat for Humanity, 251 Prospect St.
- July 25: Interfaith Shelter, 414 S. Blackstone St.
- Aug. 1: New Village Hope Church, 123 W. Porter St.
- Aug. 8: Bennett Elementary School, 820 Bennett St.
There will be a wrap-up celebration in Horace Blackman Park, 212 W. Michigan Ave. from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15.
