Saturday is a great day to adopt a new furry friend. Cat and dog adoptions will be free at both the Capital Area Humane Society and Ingham County Animal Control Shelter. The Bissell Pet Foundation is paying all adoption fees as part of a nationwide "Empty The Shelters Day".
Millions of pets are abandoned or released to shelters and rescue organizations each year. In Michigan alone, approximately 40,000 pets are euthanized yearly because they are unable to find new homes.
The goal is to get pets out of the shelters and into loving homes with forever families. Those who adopt a cat or dog tomorrow will receive special boxes which include treats, toys, 30 days of pet insurance, cleaning products and coupons. A collar and ID tag will also be included in the adoption.
New pet owners will only have to pay for the licensing fee if they are adopting a dog. The fee in Ingham County is $14.
