While cars were slowing down in Ionia County because a dog was in a road, a distracted driver did not stop in time, hitting a car and causing a chain reaction that sent four to the hospital, sheriff’s office reports.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. Saturday, when three vehicles on S. State Road near Tuttle Road were slowing down because a dog was running across the road, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office reports.

A fourth car, driven by a 20-year-old man from Portland, was distracted and unable to stop in time, the sheriff’s office reports. He hit the rear vehicle, which caused a chain reaction involving the other two vehicles.

Four people were transported by ambulance to Sparrow Ionia Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Portland man was issued a citation, the sheriff’s office reports.

Assisting the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was the Ionia Department of Public Safety, Life EMS and Reed and Hoppes Towing.
