CHARLOTTE, Mich. — Former Eaton County Sheriff Rick Jones is running for that job again. Jones announced his candidacy Monday morning. Jones served 31 years with the sheriff's office including one four-year term as sheriff. He was elected to the State House in 2004 and served the maximum three terms. He then served two terms in the State Senate before he was term limited.

Jones says he filed to run after being repeatedly asked by members of the public and sheriff's office staff. His announcement took several shots at current sheriff Tom Reich.

Jones says his primary reason for running is the treatment of retired deputy Jim West, who was forced to step down 18 months shy of a full pension because of seizures related to a beating he received from a suspect. The state employee retirement system awarded West a medical pension. The county has not said if it will appeal yet.
