Former Rep. John Dingell is currently in hospice care after being diagnosed with cancer, according to a source close to the family.

On Wednesday morning, his wife, Rep. Debbie Dingell, said she missed the State of the Union Tuesday night to stay home with her husband, former Rep. John Dingell.

She is asking for "prayers and privacy" during this difficult time and said she will be taking each day as it comes.

John Dingell suffered a heart attack back in September and was hospitalized.

He is the longest-serving U.S. congressman in history, representing the people of Michigan for nearly 59 years. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1955 and served through the end of his term in 2015.
