A city neighboring Flint has started a water main project that will disconnect about 100 residents from Flint's water system, which had been contaminated with lead.
The Flint Journal reports Burton officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a roughly $1 million main that will connect the residents to the suburban city's water system. Burton's system gets its water from Genesee County.
The project is about a half-mile from the boundary with Flint, which switched from the Detroit-area's water system to the Flint River in 2014 to save money. The river water wasn't properly treated to reduce corrosion, causing lead to leach from old pipes and fixtures into drinking water.
Elevated lead levels were found in some children.
Burton officials say affected residents will see a decrease in charges.
