Flint hopes debate brings lasting solutions

The stage is set and Flint is ready to go. The Whiting Center at University of Michigan at Flint's campus has been transformed to host presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton.

"This is something we've been waiting for, for a mighty long time, because for a long time nobody knew what was going on" said Flint Mayor Karen Weaver.

Weaver is not only grateful for the attention the debate brings for the water crisis but she thinks the national attention will also show the country all Flint has to offer.

"It's nice to be able to showcase some of the other positive things that are going on in our city" Weaver said. "We're here at U of M Flint and you know it's one of the greatest Universities in the country. And we need people to see this."

But like many Flint homeowners, Weaver does expect the candidates to have answers on long term solutions for Flint.

"We also know we need to talk about some long term solutions because we can't continue with bottled water and filters" said Weaver. "And so we're looking to see if they're going to be addressing long term solutions for the city as well."

Business owner Tim Bishop will be watching the debate closely because he's undecided and hopes the candidates talk about how to keep small business thriving.

"We're going in a pretty good direction right now. As a small business owner, I'm feeling good about it," said Bishop. "I just want to know how they're going to keep me going and protect me in the future."
