The latest grant awarded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation has pushed its giving to causes in and around Flint past $1 billion.

The milestone announced Monday reflects local grants by the foundation going back to its creation in 1926 by an automotive pioneer.

The foundation's latest Flint grant is worth $3.2 million to the Crim Fitness Foundation for ongoing support of an education effort. The Crim foundation was launched in 2014.

Crim CEO Gerry Myers says the community can better deal with challenges because of Mott's support.

Flint's drinking water was switched from a Detroit system to the Flint River in 2014, but the supply was not properly treated. That resulted in corrosion of lead pipes and elevated lead levels in some children.
