To honor a Detroit Police Sergeant who died Wednesday while on duty, Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered that flags at the State Capitol Complex be lowered to half-staff Thursday.

Detroit Police Sergeant Kevin Miller served on the Detroit Police Department for 29 years, and has been a sergeant for the past 16 years. During his time with the force, he served on patrol, investigative units and as a recruiter.

“Sgt. Miller dedicated much of his life to protecting and serving the citizens of Detroit,” Snyder said. “I send my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and community.”

Residents, businesses, schools and local governments are encouraged to display their flag at half-staff, and they should be returned to full-staff Friday.

When a flag is flown at half-staff or half-mast, the U.S. flag should be housed first to the peak for an instant, and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should again be raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day.

Funeral services for Miller will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Greater Grace Temple located at 23500 West 7 Mile Road in Detroit.
