Governor Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff on Wednesday to honor a former state representative.
Representative Michael Bennane died Sunday, Sept. 30, according to a news release.
“Michael was a key member of the Michigan Legislature who was a strong advocate for Detroit,” Snyder said. “I send my sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
Bennane was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives for 20 years and was a leading member of the Democratic liberal caucus.
He often pushed for the revitalization of American cities and chaired the chamber’s Urban Development Committee. Additionally, Bennane chaired the Public Health Committee and was speaker pro tempore.
A service in his honor will be held Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Standard Bistro and Larder, located at 5827 Jackson Rd., in Ann Arbor.
