LANSING, Mich. — The Lansing City Council passed an ordinance Monday night that will significantly reduce the number of days you can set off fireworks in the city.
The ordinance shortens the number of days from 30 to 12.
This ordinance aligns with the law the state legislature passed last year that limited which holidays you could set off fireworks.
News 10 talked to a few people who said although it's fun to celebrate with fireworks, it is important to think about others.
"I'm a veteran of the United States Army and I do believe in celebrations. Especially the fourth of July. But I also believe in a citizens quiet enjoyment of their property. Who it hurts most is people with anxiety, people with PTSD, especially veterans with PTSD, and workers who need their sleep," a Lansing resident said.
Anyone who violates the ordinance faces a $1,000 fine.
Local government may not restrict the use of fireworks during the following times and days:
Dec. 31 from 11 a.m. until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1
The Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day from 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m.
June 29 to July 4 from 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m.
July 5, if that date is a Friday or Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m.
The Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Labor Day from 11 a.m. until 11:45 p.m.
