Two people have been displaced by a house fire that started in the basement, causing smoke damage to the entire home, the East Lansing Fire Department reports.
Firefighters were dispatched to the residence at 1985 Groton Way just after 9 a.m. Tuesday. The two occupants were able to evacuate the home with no injuries, the department reports.
By 9:30 a.m., firefighters had the fire under control, and crews left the scene by 11 a.m.
It appears the fire began in the basement of the two-story home, and when crews arrived smoke was escaping through the open windows and from the garage area. Crews were able to get inside the house and extinguish the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the estimated cost of the damage the fire caused is unknown. The fire damage was contained to the basement.
