LANSING, Mich. (WSYM) — A fire at the old Walter French Junior High School in Lansing appears to have been started by a small fire to cook or stay warm.
The building is located on Mount Hope and Cedar.
The Lansing fire chief told FOX 47's Alani Letang that the fire was in the second-floor gym.
Firefighters responded at around 1:15 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from the building, according to a press release.
The department says it appears the fire had been smoldering for quite some time but crews were able to extinguish it within 30 minutes.
The building is not occupied and currently is awaiting renovations, according to the release. It doesn't have any electricity, heat or water.
"The fire appears to have been started by a non-authorized occupant that started a small fire to cook or keep warm," according to the release.
No one was injured in the fire.
Mount Hope between Washington and Cedar in Lansing was closed at 1:30 p.m. while firefighters investigated the smoke.
