Felony Charges For Courser and Gamrat

Posted

Arrest warrants have been issued for Todd Courser and Cindy Gamrat.

"Courser will be charged with one count of felony perjury, a 15 year felony for lying under oath while testifying before the house committee," said Attorney General Bill Schuette.

That plus three counts of misconduct in office, facing a total maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

"These charges relate to lying to the House Business Office investigators, instructing staff members to sign blue back rules in the House Representatives, and asking a member to send out a false email," explained Schuette.

Cindy Gamrat could face up to 10 years in prison.

"These are common law felonies called misconduct in office," explained Schuette. "They carry a five year prison term, and it all goes about corruption and performance in the conduct of the responsibilities in office."

No word from Gamrat, but her lawyer Michael Nichols released a statement saying "Bill Schuette expects that Cindy Gamrat doesn't have any fight left in her, I'm looking forward to reviewing the charges."

Courser didn't comment either when he was seen leaving his law office in Lapeer Friday afternoon.

They have until Wednesday to turn themselves in to 54-A District Court in Lansing.

Attorney General Bill Schuette says details of the investigation will be revealed in court, but this case is a reminder that no one is above the law.

"Representatives Courser and Gamrat sadly failed to service their constituents in an honorable fashion, and worst yet, worst yet we alleged and we will prove in court beyond a reasonable doubt that they broke the law," said Schuette.

Something they'll have to prove in front of an Ingham County judge.
