LANSING, Mich. — The Drug Enforcement Association says over 23,000 pounds of unused or expired prescription medications were collected in Michigan during last month's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The Detroit Field Division of the DEA, which covers Michigan and Ohio, says it took in about 23,692 pounds of drugs in Michigan and 50,822 in Ohio. Altogether, that's more than 75,500 pounds.

The DEA say the event on April 27 collected about 12 million pounds of drugs at nearly 6,400 collection sites nationwide.

This brings the total amount of drugs collected by the DEA since the fall of 2010 to 11,816,393 pounds or 5,908 tons.

The DEA's next National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will held on Oct. 26, 2019.
