The United State Department of Labor has filed a lawsuit against Maru Sushi and its owner for alleged labor law violations.
The lawsuit, filed in Grand Rapids Federal Court, accuses the restaurant of paying its workers less than minimum wage, not paying overtime, not keeping adequate time records, and illegally forcing servers to pool their tips.
Maru Sushi locations in East Lansing, Okemos, Grand Rapids, and Midland are named as defendants in the lawsuit, along with owner Robert Song.
The Department of Labor is seeking damages equal to the amount of unpaid compensation for 148 current or former employees.
