FDA tells hair dye makers "get the lead out"

Posted

The FDA is ordering hair dye manufacturers to remove lead from their products.

The majority of hair dye products do not contain lead acetate, which is used as a color additive. However, the ones that do are those that gradually darken gray hair known as progressive hair dyes. The FDA is giving manufacturers one year to change the formulas. If you want to make sure your hair dye is safe read the label.

The FDA says any products containing the compound must contain a warning statement. Lead exposure in adults can lead to raised blood pressure and organ damage. And in babies and small children, it can stunt growth and cause permanent damage to brain cells.
