FBI Director James Comey says the bureau paid more than $1 million dollars to hack into the iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino terrorists.
At a security forum in London, Comey was asked by interviewer Brooke Masters of the Financial Times how much the agency paid a third party firm to get into Syed Farook's phone.
Masters said, "So how much did you pay for this software?'' Comey answered, "A lot." Masters said, "Really?" Comey replied, "Let's see, more than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months, for sure. And so, it's a...but it was, in my view, worth it."
Comey makes about $183,000 a year. He'll make around $1.34 million during his time as FBI Director.
The bureau initially got a court order to force Apple to break into the iPhone but later dropped it because it found a way to hack into the device without Apple's help.
The FBI refuses to reveal the identity of the third party that provided the help.
