There is more than one hit and run crash every minute on America's roads according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

There is no hard data to explain why the figure is so high but experts suggest that drivers, as well as pedestrians, aren't paying enough attention to the roads.

"Pedestrians and motorists alike driving while distracted or walking while their face is buried in their phone makes them less alert to their surroundings," said Jake Nelson from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

The number of people that have died from hit and runs has increased by 60% in the last seven years with more than 2,000 people dying from hit and run crashes in 2016 and nearly two thirds of the fatalities were people on foot or on bikes.
