LANSING, Mich. — Taking advantage of the honor system, a small produce stand and farm in Gregory has a warning for people that live near there after their stand was robbed.
The thief, or thieves, stole the money box right off of the stand and got away with the cash.
The owners of the farm said something like this has never happened to them before.
"Well, I came out this morning because we set the stand up at 9:00 a.m. and the box that the cash was in was ripped off the front of the stand," C&C Micro Farm co-owner Craig Pettersson said. Pettersson owns the farm with his wife.
Fresh tomatoes, melons, onions and more can all be found at the farm in Livingston County, but what you won't find is the money box, that used to be screwed into the side of the stand.
"I wasn't really mad. I was surprised more than anything. You know, if people needed the money that bad, then they probably should have it. But you don't have to steal, I would have given it to them," he added.
Pettersson plans to buy security cameras and he's making a new, sturdier metal money box.
"I've built a box that they're going to need a sledgehammer to get off of there now so they better bring a C4 if they want that box . I never want to get ripped off (again) so if I could prevent that, that would be good."
He has a message to the thief or thieves: "Crime doesn't pay."
Petterson said the stand will be back open Wednesday with the new strongbox.
There wasn't a police report made about the incident, Pettersson said he just wanted people to be aware of the situation.
