JACKSON, Mich. — A family is demanding answers after they say their 10-year-old daughter was attacked by a dog.
The family says the dog is still around, and they are fed up.
It happened Saturday at Shady Park mobile homes in Jackson. Chylynn Champion was with friends when one of the kids suggested they get popsicles at his house. The girl had no idea what would happen once they opened the door.
"We couldn't get one because the dog ran out, bit my friend, scratched her when she went to jump up and then my other friend got up on a car and I was there and the dog jumped off the porch and bit me," Champion said.
The 10-year-old girl has been reliving the moment she says a neighbor's dog bit her on the face. Her mother, Jessica Hall says she got a knock on the door from another neighbor telling her what had happened. She wasn't prepared for what she was about to see.
"I think that was one of the most scary moments. I was screaming and she wasn't coming. And I saw her face and said 'she's going to need stitches, I need to take her to the hospital now,'" Hall said through tears.
Champion went to the emergency room where she received ten stitches. She also had a black eye and cuts on her lip and forehead from the dog's teeth. According to the family, this is not the first time the dog has been aggressive. The dog is owned by the managers of the mobile home park and is currently under a 10-day quarantine because of the alleged attack. But the family says this is not enough.
"It's basically the same rules that the dog had before. Nothing has changed. Nothing is being done."
Hall said the dog's owners were sympathetic at first, but now are not helping. She says she wants to make sure something like this never happens again.
"It's not the dog's fault. It's the owner. I want them to get rid of the dog. I want them to see that this is not OK. That dog needs to not be in this community. There are children everywhere, everywhere. I want to make sure this doesn't happen to anybody else," she said.
Fox 47 reached out to the owners of the park, QSP Inc. They declined to comment. We also tried to contact the owners of the dog who have yet to respond.
Jackson County Animal Control says the dog was up to date on shots but not licensed. Animal Control will evaluate the dog again to see if it has aggressive behavior once the ten-day quarantine is up, which is standard protocol.
